Compass Control

Compass Control maps directions to devices in your room. You’re on the couch — point toward the lights, twist your wrist, they toggle. Point toward the TV, twist, it turns on. Point toward the fan, twist, it starts.

The compass divides the room around you into zones, each mapped to a device. Calibrate it from wherever you usually sit. Zones are forgiving — face the general direction and it picks the right one.

Each direction from your seat maps to a device. Point and twist.

Point toward a device, then twist or tap to toggle it. You can control everything in the room without moving from where you’re sitting.

To use twist, go to Settings → Motion Gestures and set a twist direction (clockwise or counter-clockwise) to Compass Toggle.

  1. Choose a Room Sensor

You need a room sensor — a Home Assistant entity that tells HA which room you’re in (e.g., sensor.my_watch_ble_area). Go to the iPhone app → Rooms settings → pick your sensor.

Bermuda BLE Trilateration is a good option — it tracks your Apple Watch via Bluetooth and reports which area you’re in.

  2. Map Compass Entities

Under Room Mappings, select the room you’re in and tap Add Compass Entities. This opens the compass control settings.

Add all the entities you want to control in that room — lights, TV, fan, blinds, whatever.

  3. Capture Directions

Tap Start Streaming to begin reading real-time compass data. Then for each entity, physically point your wrist toward the device and tap Capture to save that direction.

Do this for every entity you added. Sit in your usual spot while calibrating.

  4. Add the Compass Tile

Add a compass tile to your page. It shows a live needle and the device you’re currently aimed at, updating as you turn. There’s a toggle for this in Compass Settings.

  5. Test It

Point at a device, twist. It should toggle. If directions feel off, re-capture from your usual spot.

Found in the iPhone app under Settings → Rooms:

  • Compass HUD — Shows a heading overlay on the watch screen while compass mode is active, so you can see what direction you’re facing
  • Tap to Toggle — Tap the compass display to toggle the device you’re aimed at
  • Live Compass Tile — Adds a tile with a live needle and the currently aimed device, updating as you turn
